Education chief DeVos admits she doesn't know how MI schools are performing

DeVos There is an ‘urgency’ in solving gun violence

'That should be an option for states and communities to consider.

"Well, we should be funding and investing in students, not in school - school buildings, not in institutions, not in systems", DeVos said. President Trump's 2017-2018 budget called for $1.4 billion to support investments in school choice, while cutting $9.2 billion from the already measly federal education budget. DeVos has denied it.

DeVos' only previous experience in the education field before becoming the nation's top education official was as a school choice advocate in MI, pushing for changes in the state's laws to encourage charter and private school choice.

Her halting answers prompted questions about the interview at Monday's White House press briefing. Now, that criticism is resurfacing after DeVos faltered when asked about campus sexual assault in a new interview with 60 Minutes.

"One only needs to follow the trail of donor money to Republicans to know that Walker has done her bidding, funneling money away from our public schools and mismanaging education". What about those kids?

"Stahl knocked the Education Secretary at every turn, bringing up her wealth and describing the journey 'from her sheltered life in MI to her life now as a lightning rod in Washington'".

MI implemented a new state assesment, the M-STEP, in spring 2015, replacing the more than 40-year-old MEAP test, making past comparissons hard.

Lesley Stahl: Have the public schools in MI gotten better?

'I don't know. I don't know.

"The 13 minute segment was heavy on critics who despise DeVos", said the Media Research Center's Scott Whitlock.

When Stahl asked whether, as secretary, she'd ever visited a failing school to find out what went wrong, DeVos said, "I have not intentionally visited schools that are underperforming". "Have you tried to figure out what they're doing?"

To understand how, we need to start with a letter that Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, sent to DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions on March 5 about the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. There is no doubt about it.

"Maybe you should", Stahl said. DeVos didn't seem to know, and Stahl was quite sure they're doing worse.

Ms. DeVos later released a map of her 60 school visits taken in her first year of office, noting that a lot of them were traditional public schools.

DEVOS: Maybe I should. Yes. Whether any of this benefits students or not is still to be determined, but for the time being, the secretary is bumbling her way through just like many of her inexperienced cabinet cohorts. Sometimes it does. Again, I think, I think. "Unfortunately, DeVos answered the questions as they were asked, rather than articulating her own philosophy and beliefs". DeVos, saying that too many men were falsely accused, set new rules making it harder for accusers to prove their accusations.

"Maybe you should", Stahl suggested.

STAHL: Yeah, but are they the same? But I'm committed to a process that's fair for everyone involved, ' said DeVos.
