Bannon to France's Far Right National Party: 'History Is on Our Side'

Marine Le Pen is assured of being re-elected as the Front National party president as their is no competition

Bannon was reportedly set to meet with the French party's leader, Marine Le Pen, at the convention Saturday. Nine months after Le Pen was defeated by centrist Emmanuel Macron for president in a bruising battle between nationalists and globalists, the FN is struggling to rebound. A new leadership structure and new bylaws are also being unveiled at the two-day congress.

Le Pen, the only candidate for National Front president, says the changes amount to a "cultural revolution" so the reshaped party can "implant itself, create alliances and govern".

In the presidential election, it appeared this strategy paid off, as Le Pen gained more than 10 million votes (33.9 per cent) in the final round, despite her weird and catastrophic performance in a debate with Macron, which cost her support.

The trained lawyer, who took over the FN leadership from her father Jean-Marie Le Pen in 2011, is running unopposed for a third term at the helm at the conference starting Saturday in the northern city of Lille.

Jean-Marie Le Pen said that in losing heavily to Macron his daughter had "not been equal to the challenge" - a sentiment echoed by many FN members.

Observers said the party may keep the word "national" in a future label with "Rassemblement national" (national assembly) a putative alternative.

"Voters and even party members are questioning her ability, or not, to continue the feeling that the adventure continues and the party can still go forward", Cautrès told 20 Minutes news programme.

Her poor showing in a final TV debate against Macron raised questions about her fitness to lead one of the world's biggest economies and in the months since both party and leader have appeared somewhat deflated.

"She is not simply a rising star on the right in France. He has understood like Trump and Matteo Salvini [the head of the Italian League] the wish of the people to control their own destiny".

Steve Bannon delivers a speech during the French far-right Front National (FN) party annual congress, March 10, 2018 in Lille, France.

"She wants to revive her links with party members and gear up for next year's European Elections". It won more seats in the European Parliament than any other French party in 2014.

The one-time White House strategist, who is often credited with helping Donald Trump win the presidency in 2016, told the group, "The tide of history is with us, and it will compel us to victory after victory after victory", The Washington Post reported.

However, Len Pen's credibility is among the potential obstacles to a possible far-right comeback.

This week Le Pen seemed heartened by the strong gains made by the allied anti-immigrant League party in Italy's general election, hailing it as a "new stage in the awakening of the people".

"Today's politics can not be summed up by the left-right divide".

The weekend congress is expected to erase one persistent problem for Le Pen - her unpredictable, bombastic father - by eliminating his title of honorary president-for-life from party statutes.

The European tour comes as Bannon's role in American politics is uncertain.
