Waymo is testing self-driving trucks in Atlanta

Above Waymo's now doing trucks

The pilot is being done in partnership with Google, another Alphabet company and Waymo's former direct owner back when it was the Google self-driving auto project.

During these Atlanta trials, the trucks will be carrying cargo to Google's data centers in the area.

So, as Waymo said, be sure to keep a beady eye out for the self-driving trucks if you're a resident of Atlanta. Waymo and Google's logistics team are pairing up to tackle this together, and this pilot program is the culmination of one year of testing in California and Arizona.

"Our software is learning to drive big rigs in much the same way a human driver would after years of driving passenger cars", the company wrote. The added equipment is identical to that in Waymo's self-driving minivans.

Although Waymo is testing self-driving technology on the trucks, there will be a driver behind the wheel.

Waymo was a few days late to announce the rollout. Otto, the company Uber acquired in 2016 and has been the center of attention in the lawsuit between Waymo and Uber. "We are excited to partner with Waymo, the leader in self-driving technology, in testing self-driving trucks here in the No. 1 state for business", Deal said. As the company explains, the basic principles are the same but driving a semi is harder as the braking, turning radius and blind spots are completely different than on normal passenger cars.

Today's announcement comes a couple of weeks after Waymo announced its self-driving cars had covered 5 million miles on public roads. According to the American Trucking Associations, trucking revenues were $676.2 billion in 2016, while trucks moved more than 10.4 billion tons of freight.

The advent of autonomous trucking has the potential to have an enormous impact on the USA economy as trucks still carry much of the freight hauled across the nation.

However, it isn't just minivans that have gotten the Waymo treatment. The company is reimagining many different types of transportation - from ride-hailing to logistics.
