Trump Asked McGahn, Priebus About Interviews With Mueller

Former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg said Monday he refuses to comply with a grand jury subpoena in the Russia investigation

Mueller is investigating potential collusion between Trump's winning 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation, along with "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation". After firing Comey, the President said privately that the dismissal had relieved "great pressure" on him.

President Donald Trump leaves the President's Room of the Senate at the Capitol after he formally signed his cabinet nominations into law, in Washington, Jan. 20, 2017.

As things progressed, however, Trump's defense team began structuring a legal argument around the claim that Mueller has not met the required standard to merit an interview with Trump, and that a potential interview could set a risky legal precedent. The special counsel has questioned witnesses about their interactions with the President since the investigation began.

Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen is among those now being probed for the president's Russian Federation dealings. "White House counsels are not the president's personal lawyer".

President Donald Trump has reportedly had conversations with two witnesses who have testified before special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators about the Russian Federation election meddling probe. When the incident was made public, Trump reportedly instructed then-White House staff secretary Rob Porter to inform McGahn that he should issue a statement denying the account, which McGahn also refused.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment, while the special counsel's office declined comment. McGahn never issued such a denial.

Sources told the NYT that McGahn had to remind Trump that he had asked for the special counsel to be sacked.

"The idea that somehow President Trump didn't know anything about this and that Attorney Cohen was just running off and doing what he thought was best without any consultation with President Trump, it is patently absurd", Michael Avenatti, the attorney for Stephanie Clifford, told CNN's Anderson Cooper on Wednesday night.

It is not clear how the confrontation was resolved.

Priebus met with the President in the West Wing in December, according to the people with knowledge of their encounter. Kelly and others have cautioned him.

The Times report referenced the obstruction investigation with regard to Trump's interactions with McGahn and Priebus.

Trump also asked his former chief of staff, Reince Priebus, how his interview with the special counsel investigators had gone and whether they had been 'nice'.
