Two children killed after auto hits pedestrians in Brooklyn

The scene of a fatal crash at Ninth Street and Fifth Avenue in Park Slope Brooklyn

Two children were killed and a pregnant woman was left injured after being hit by a driver in New York City on Monday.

In 2016, a motorist fatally struck a 41-year-old man at the intersection of Ninth Street and Fifth Avenue, where 33 others have suffered traffic-related injuries since 2010, according to data from the city's Vision Zero initiative.

Dorothy Bruns, the driver of the vehicle, ran over Josh Lew and Abigail Blumenstein, killing them. Miles, a Tony award winning Broadway actress, is also pregnant. "The little girl, she just rode over her", another witness said. She dragged the stroller and...the other baby was pinned under the vehicle.

The five were rushed to New York-Presbyterian Methodist Brooklyn Hospital.

"I wish she was under arrest right now", the mayor, a Park Slope homeowner, said of 44-year-old Dorothy Bruns, who hasn't been charged in Monday's crash.

The driver is in police custody, and charges against her are pending an investigation, according to authorities.

WPIX-TV reported that one of its reporters witnessed the pregnant woman and the two children get off a bus with a stroller when they were struck by a driver who appeared to be speeding up to make it through a light. It is unclear if the driver was under the influence of anything or had a medical episode.

"Everybody was crying, yelling, screaming", she recounted. She hit the baby here, the mother.

"I share the frustration of many in my community - I wish she were under arrest right now and I certainly believe that measures need to be taken to make sure she will not drive a vehicle anymore". Meanwhile others tended to the mother lying helpless in the middle of the street.

"God forbid you have some sort of impairment; you shouldn't be driving.at least there have to be clear standards of what you have to do to report it and what action needs to be taken once you report it, and if you don't report it what happens to you and I don't think that's the case right now", he said.
