SpaceX puts commercial satellite in orbit as Florida sleeps

SpaceX Falcon 9 launch scheduled for Tuesday

Before Tuesday, Hispasat's previous Cape launches were on 2000 and 2002 on Atlas rockets.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launches the Hispasat 30W-6 satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on March 6, 2018. This will increase to eight with the successful launch on Tuesday.

"Very proud of the SpaceX team!" This will be launch satellite of SpaceX this year. We've nearly come to expect landings after each SpaceX launch now.

Following take-off, the satellite would be deployed just under 33 minutes later, after which the first stage of Falcon 9 would fall back to Earth.

During the Falcon Heavy launch, one of the landing pod drones, Of Course I Still Love You, which was scheduled to land the third booster was reported to have sustained damages during the unsuccessful landing attempt.

SpaceX has 30 missions scheduled for 2018, nearly doubling the number from 18 in 2017.

The mission itself wasn't among the company's most spectacular: there was no dramatic landing of the first-stage booster or Roadster being launched toward Mars.

Last month, SpaceX successfully delivered a different Spanish satellite into orbit.

Hispasat 30W-6 was built by California company SSL (formerly Space Systems/Loral) and has a design lifetime of 15 years, SpaceX representatives added. Hispasat distributes Spanish and Portuguese content, including direct-to-home and high-definition television. Users of this service can also enjoy the broadband service, while the company also provides data for governments and corporate users. However, the launch was delayed to allow time for more checks on the pressurization system for Falcon 9's payload. The launch happened at exactly 12:33 a.m. EST (0533 GMT) Tuesday. Other upcoming launch missions, as well as those already completed can be found here.
