Irish Met Office issues red weather warning for entire country

MET Eireann have extended the Snow and Ice Status Red Alert to 18.00 on Friday evening.

The Government has lifted the advice for people to stay indoors - however they should still use their own judgment as to when is safe to go out.

Up to 25cms of snow is expected in some areas, with predictions that accumulations could hit 40cms.

The NECG said the impact of the storm varied across the country, noting: "People need to take account of circumstances locally before deciding to venture outdoors or undertake journeys".

All non-emergency services are to shut down, including schools and hospital outpatients and admissions services, amid potentially life-threatening Arctic weather and blizzards.

The worst of Storm Emma is over, but now we face another problem.

If you haven't already heard, the United Kingdom, especially in the north, has been getting pummeled with snow from the so-called "Beast from the East" over the last week.

Drivers have been warned there will be zero visibility.

The National Emergency Coordination Group has said in a statement that conditions are, and will, remain very hard and the public are advised continue to exercise high levels of caution for their own safety in the accumulated snow and icy conditions.

Nine people have been arrested following reports of looting in Dublin overnight.

Schools, airports, rail, bus and tram travel, creches and childcare facilities are all being impacted.

Transport bosses are meeting this afternoon to decide when public services will be back up and running.

Earlier in the week, the Department of Education announced that all schools, third level institutions, colleges and centres of further education in red alert areas would remain closed today.
