DOJ to Investigate Oakland Mayor ICE Raid Warning

U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi

At least two people in Fresno County were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents this week in a massive operation that swept over Northern California.

A total of 232 suspected undocumented immigrants were arrested in the San Francisco Bay area, the agency said in a statement reported by Fox News.

The sweep became controversial after Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf put out a warning saying she had learned ICE was conduction an operation, and telling illegal immigrants to take necessary steps.

She said Schaaf's actions were under "review" but would not be more specific.

Schaaf has said her warning was her "duty and moral obligation", and stands by her decision, even though she has since received death threats for doing so.

Of the 232 people arrested, ICE said 115 had prior criminal convictions, including some for violent or sexual offenses. "And that's now under review by the Department of Justice". "She gave them warning, and there were 800 that we were unable to locate because of that warning, so that community is a lot less safe than it would have been". In the first three months of fiscal year 2018, which began October 1, the San Francisco field office made 373 arrests of non-criminal undocumented immigrants - roughly 100 less than the entire 2016 fiscal year. Organizer Erica Leyva said parents should have guardian contact information on hand and their children's documentation in a folder.

"The arrestees who are not being federally prosecuted will be processed administratively for removal from the United States", the agency said. "We're going to keep enforcing the law".

ICE said those arrested included several people with convictions for crimes such as assault with a deadly weapon, including a man who had been previously deported to Mexico eight times.

Then she hit on sanctuary cities, claiming Oakland is exercising its "legal right to be a sanctuary city" and that what is actually illegal is the government "retaliating against jurisdictions that are exercising their right to have sanctuary policies". "My priority is for the well-being and safety of all residents - particularly our most vulnerable - and I know that Oakland is safer when we share information, encourage community awareness and care for our neighbors".

ICE deportation officers and special agents arrested 212 individuals for violating federal immigration laws and served 122 notices of inspection (NOIs) to businesses in the Los Angeles area of responsibility (AOR) during a five-day targeted operation.
