Deontay Wilder knocks Joshua, says Hearns 'milking him like a cow'

Deontay Wilder faces a big test in Luis Ortiz in Boxing's March Top 5

"It will be the biggest fight of our generation and the biggest fight of both of our careers".

"Really, Ortiz has got no choice but to fight".

And that makes the makes the current heavyweight division, if not exactly transcendent, in its own way resurgent. Sure, there have been recent exceptions like Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, but they're the outliers. He believes the best way to do that is to offer fans a highlight-reel ending similar to the one he produced against Bermane Stiverne a year ago.

"Your grandfather's heavyweights, most of which who looked up to the likes of 6'6" Primo Carnera and 6'6.5" Jess Willard, would be startled to see what the division has developed into. There's no way around that; it's simply a fact of the sport. It's frustrating how much a loss hurts a fighter in modern boxing. The only thing missing is convincing the public that he's the genuine article.

"When I look at him and I look at me, we have similarities", Wilder said Thursday before a press conference in Manhattan.

While the heavyweights of today can not match up with those of the Golden Age between 1964 and 1990, when Ali, Frazier, and Foreman ruled, followed by Holmes, Tyson, and Holyfield, and with challengers like Jerry Quarry, Ken Norton, George Chuvalo, Oscar Bonavena, and Ron Lyle waiting in the wings, what the current division lacks in quality it makes up for in quantity.

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder would have been a household name, not a guy mistaken for LeBron James at Disney World. Neither has fought a murderer's row when it comes to opposition but AJ's looks stellar next to Wilder's.

In November, Joshua insisted he was not "ducking" any fighter, adding he would fight Wilder on "my terms".

"Deontay Wilder put everything aside to face one of the greatest amateur heavyweights in the history of boxing".

"And when I fight Joshua, he will be on the edge of his seat, which he should be".

Deontay Wilder, the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion, faces the biggest test of his career - after 39 victories and 38 knockouts - when he faces the unbeaten Cuban Luis Ortiz in NY on Saturday night but the American rounded on Anthony Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn with an extraordinary attack on Friday, accusing him of being "another white man milking a black man".

At six-foot-four and 240-pounds, Ortiz is as wide as he is tall, a southpaw, and possesses skull crushing knockout power. He'd be favored over every opponent Wilder has ever faced.

And there is always Tyson Fury, a colorful 29-year-old blowhard who beat Klitschko in a awful fight in 2015 and seemed headed for an interesting bout with Wilder but hasn't fought since.

Looking past his history with drugs is just too hard to do in this case, making the idea of Ortiz truly being the most well-rounded and risky heavyweight in boxing just that - an idea, if not an outright mirage.

"I think Deontay deserves incredible props for taking this kind of risk and embracing it", promoter Lou DiBella said. He's eating the best part of the pie because he talks to promote and he's getting money.

For Ortiz, the questions facing him have more to do with age (he's 38, although unfounded rumors still circulate that he's much older) and whether his most dominant victories, including a dismantling of Bryant Jennings in 2015, were more the result of performance-enhancing drugs? "Of course, I expect him to win, but it will be a 60-40, maybe even a 50-50 fight". "You had your chance", Wilder said of Ortiz.

The victor of that fight would then claim all of the existing five heavyweight belts.

If Wilder and Joshua face-off this year, who takes it?

"It's about time for somebody to say it and come out with it and I don't care who hears it".

Counting Wilder out comes at the expense of acknowledging that he brings the most unsafe weapon of either man into the fight with his huge right hand. And that can only be realized by Joshua fighting and beating Wilder; not Ortiz. He's got to deal with Parker first on March 31, it's a tough fight. Eddie doesn't have to take a punch in his life.

Where Wilder is wild, Joshua is technically sound.

Parker and Joshua will face one another on April 1 NZT in Cardiff.

Wilder, however, believes that the 28-year-old Joshua needs to think again. I made them many offers if they're talking about offers. You know I'm ready to fight at any given time. Wilder struggled a bit with Szpilka until the ninth round, when he caught Szpilka with a right cross that rendered him unconscious for several minutes.

That would push the fight back to 2019, meaning British fight fans will have to get used to cheering on Wilder as they wait for a fight with Joshua to get made.

"We want to see the very best beat the very best, if they want to get to the very top, and I know Joshua does".
