Days After Ceasefire Resolution For Syria: 'More bombing. More Fighting. More Death'

Syrian troops launch new offensives in Ghouta in defiance of Russian truce

On Monday, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said that on instructions from Russian President Vladimir Putin a daily humanitarian pause was introduced in Eastern Ghouta from 09:00 to 14:00 local time, starting from Tuesday, February 27.

The opposition's Syrian Civil Defence, also known as White Helmets, confirmed the casualty figure.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said before the truce went into effect at 9am on Thursday, government shelling and air strikes on eastern Ghouta killed three people.

The Syrian regime has accused the Islamist and jihadist groups inside Ghouta of sabotaging the initiative by shelling the designated humanitarian corridors to hold civilians as human shields.

Ankara said Turkey would not suspend its military operations against the Syrian Kurdish fighters during the 30-day ceasefire demanded by the United Nations.

"They are asking civilians to leave eastern Ghouta on the false premise that they can then attack anyone left in the area as much as they would like".

The US representative Kelley Currie accused the Syrian regime of violating the ceasefire, while Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused the rebels. "It could be extended but why go on if there are no results", he said.

Turkey considers the US-backed Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, a "terrorist" organisation connected to a Kurdish insurgency within its own borders.

As the war in Syria approaches the seven-year mark in March, ambassadors at the United Nations on Wednesday sparred over why a 30-day cease-fire that the Security Council adopted on Saturday had yet to take effect.

USA representative Kelley Currie accused the regime of violating the ceasefire, while Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia blamed the rebels.

France and the US called on Turkey this week to halt attacks on Afrin in line with a resolution adopted by the U.N. Security Council on Saturday demanding a 30-day cease-fire in Syria.

He said regime forces took advantage of the "intensive bombardment and the clashes on the edge of Eastern Ghouta to make a limited advance in the Hosh al-Zawahira and Shaifuniyeh districts".
