Western Powers Condemn Iran Over Alleged Arms-Embargo Violations

US allies slam Iran for violating UN arms embargo on Yemen

The Houthi movement has been defending Yemen against a bloody Saudi-led military campaign, which was launched in 2015 with the help of the U.S. and the United Kingdom to reinstall the country's former Riyadh-friendly government.

Meanwhile, Iran's envoy to the United Nations says that the USA and the UK are trying to distract the worldwide community away from Saudi Arabia's war crimes in Yemen by drafting such resolutions.

After Russia's veto, the Security Council adopted a rival Russian draft that did not mention Iran and simply renewed the United Nations sanctions regime on Yemen for a year, Reuters reported.

Russia's veto of a British-drafted resolution renewing sanctions on Yemen is a setback for the USA as it pushes the United Nations Security Council to take a stronger stance towards Iran over its role in regional conflicts and missile tests.

The UN experts, however, said they were unable to identify the supplier.

On Monday, the resolution gained 11 favorable votes at the 15-member Security Council but was halted by Russia's veto. The transfer of arms by Iran to the Houthi violates the embargo place on the Houthis, it also violates UN Security Council 2231, which implemented the nuclear deal.

At least nine Yemeni civilians were killed and several others injured by Saudi-led airstrikes in two provinces of the war-torn Yemen on Wednesday, medical officials told Xinhua.

The UN has blamed the Saudi-led bombing campaign for much of the devastation and violence that has killed more than 10,000 Yemenis, displaced 2 million people, and created what it has called the world's biggest humanitarian crisis in the poor Arab country.

The coalition, which has fought the Houthis since 2015, was past year blacklisted by the United Nations for the killing and maiming of children.

He also affirmed that the coalition forces' commitments to fighting terrorism and to human rights laws.

U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to pull out of the nuclear deal unless it is made stronger and more is done to limit Iran's ballistic-missile activities and involvement in regional conflicts. Western powers and their Gulf Arab allies say Iran is a destabilising influence in the Middle East.
