Turkish women sentenced to death in Iraq for IS links

Unfair ISIS Trial in Iraq Hands Women Harshest Sentences

The women confessed to marrying IS fighters or providing the group "with logistical aid or helping them carry out terrorist attacks", the judge said.

Thousands of foreign women joined ISIS after the group tore through northern Iraq in 2014 and seized almost a third of the country's territory.

"But keeping women and children who did nothing wrong beyond having a relative join ISIS out of work, out of school, and in fear of arrest every day will do nothing to foster reconciliation in Iraq".

Another Turkish woman accused of joining the jihadist group was given a life sentence, the official said, adding they had all acknowledged the charges against them. The sources stressed that they have requested the return of children and adults who have not committed any crimes - four children have been returned to Turkey so far.

A spokesman made the announcement Sunday as Iraq conducts trials for hundreds of foreign women who have been detained. One of them told the judge she had taken part in fighting against Iraqi forces alongside the jihadists, he said.

About 1,700 women and children linked to an "Islamic state" surrendered or were captured in Iraq.

Earlier this month a Turkish woman was also condemned to die, and 10 others sentenced to life imprisonment.

Last month, Iraq's Central Criminal Court issued a death penalty by hanging for a German citizen of Moroccan origin in accordance with Anti-Terrorism Law.

Human rights organizations and observers contend that the legal process in Iraq is not fair. Iraq's government declared victory over ISIS December 2017 after Iraqi forces expelled militants from their last remaining pockets in western Iraq.

Experts estimate that 20,000 people are being held in jail in Iraq for alleged membership of ISIS.

Separately, authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan said in early February they had detained some 4,000 suspected ISIS members, including foreigners.
