Transgender wrestler from Euless Trinity wins 2nd state title

Mack Beggs of Euless Trinity smiles in the closing seconds of a Class 6A girls 110-pound semifinal bout during the UIL State Wrestling Championships at the Berry Center on Saturday

"You put me in front of anybody and I'll wrestle them", he said.

Beggs attracted controversy a year ago, after a parent of a female competitor filed a suit to stop Beggs from wrestling as a girl.

Parents WFAA spoke with all seem to support Beggs' choice to be transgender, however many voiced that he should be wrestling boys or not wrestling at all.

In the video below, Beggs, who entered the state tournament with a 32-0 record, is seen rolling out of a pinfall to avoid defeat in a title match with Chelsea Sanchez, who Beggs beat previous year.

Before falling to Beggs in the semifinals, Cypress Ranch High School's Kayla Fits, actually told the Dallas Morning News that she was going to take his title.

"They're saying 'steroids.' They're saying, 'Oh, they're beating up on girls, ' " Beggs said, according to the News.

However, Beggs' mother, Angela McNew, insists that it is her daughter's moves and wrestling strategies that have put her on top - and not the added power she has gleaned from her ongoing male hormone therapy.

Many parents have been outraged to see their daughters wrestling someone who, effectively, has the strength of a young man. Beggs is 34-0 this season and Fitts is 52-0. "I've been through too much (expletive) for anyone to put me down".

"It sure as hell didn't stop me from doing what I wanted to do in the past, and it won't stop me from what I want to do in the future", Beggs said.

Because of a state athletic policy, high school student-athletes must compete as the gender that's on their birth certificate. "Beggs and his family have repeatedly said he [she] wants to compete against boys".

She went on to insist that she has been the unfair victim of gender prejudice and discrimination that violates her so-called "civil right" to compete as a male - even though she is still a biological female.

There was plenty of outrage on social media over the unfair advantage Beggs has over the competition, and over the effect transgenders are having on women's sports. According to the Los Angeles Times, a lawsuit also sought to stop Beggs from wrestling girls, but that was dismissed by a county judge.

Beggs wants to wrestle in the NCAA and is entertaining a scholarship offer from an out of state school. "I've worked too hard for that".
