In a statement, the municipal government said Three Canadians and two Americans were among the injured.

Mexican officials are reporting that an explosion on a ferry preparing to take tourists to Playa del Carmen left at least 25 people injured Wednesday.

The 12-year-old and 14-year-old boys were hit with flying glass and shrapnel.

According to their family, the boys received cuts and bruises but they are recovering.

None of the injuries were life-threatening, the Associated Press reported. Their parents were not hurt.

Initial reports noted that a gas leak or an engine failure might have caused the explosion, but authorities still have not confirmed the real cause. Some of the injuries also included minor cuts and those affected in the incident were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Videos uploaded to social media showed emergency crews nursing injured people at the dock and people rushing for help.

Investigation is now underway to determine the origin of the explosion.

It added that service to the nearby resort island of Cozumel would continue with other ferry companies that operate from the municipal dock.
