State investigated after Flordia school shooting suspect cut himself

Not Released

Authorities say Cruz, a volatile 19-year-old who had been expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, opened fire there Wednesday, killing 17 people and wounding more than a dozen others.

Cruz's attorney, Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein, announced the news Saturday.

"The only question is, does he live or does he die?"

"Our office will announce our formal position at the appropriate time", Satz said.

Howard Finkelstein, Cruz's court-appointed lawyer, said, according to WPLG: "This kid, in his own way, was screaming out in every way the mind knows how to scream out".

He is being held without bond in Broward County and is scheduled to appear before a judge Monday afternoon for a hearing to address whether certain documents in the case should remain sealed. "You have a random internet posting that suggests the person wants to do something, not that they are planning on doing something". On Friday, he visited shooting survivors and first responders.

They told Cruz he needed to ask permission to take out the guns.

According to the New York Daily News, Donald Trump hit the links at his Florida golf course on the same day that one of the Parkland High School shooting victims was buried. Investigators said he slipped away during the chaos by mixing in with the other students.

Federal Bureau of Investigation guidelines meant to balance national security with civil liberties protections impose restrictions on the steps agents may take during the assessment phase.

Sessions said Friday the shooting that killed 17 people was a "tragic consequence" of the FBI's failures. FBI Director Christopher Wray said the information was never relayed to the Miami field office. The FBI says it still hasn't conclusively linked the account to the alleged shooter.

"We have spoken with victims and families and deeply regret the additional pain this causes all those affected by this horrific tragedy", Wray said in the statement.

The sheriff also castigated people who he said are making copycat threats at other schools, warning that anyone caught will be fully prosecuted. However, Bennight, who lives in MS, told the agents he had no information about who made the comment.

Cruz's apparent digital footprint includes slurs against blacks and Muslims, and declarations of a desire to shoot people.

After one member expressed hatred for gay people, Cruz agreed, saying, 'Shoot them in the back of head'.

"No other information was included with that comment which would indicate a time, location or the true identity of the person who made the comment", FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Lasky told reporters.

On his Instagram page, Cruz brandished multiple guns: a shotgun and a BB gun. Another post on the page is a view down the barrel of a gun with a holographic sight out a window onto the street.

Some gun control proponents and legal experts said Wednesday's shooting might have been averted if Florida were among the handful of USA states with laws allowing police and family members to obtain restraining orders barring people suspected of being a threat from possessing guns.

The family knew he had a gun.

They had "no indication that anything severe like this was wrong", Lewis said.

The family believed Cruz was depressed, but attributed that to his mother's death, not mental illness, Lewis said.

Cruz, 19, moved in with James and Kimberly Snead of Parkland, Florida in late November after his adoptive mother died earlier that month from complications of pneumonia, they told the South Florida Sun Sentinel in an interview published Sunday.

It was no secret that Nikolas Cruz met the classic profile: He had a history of mental illness.

Cruz was getting treatment at a mental health clinic for a while but hadn't been there for more than a year, Broward County Mayor Beam Furr told CNN.
