Yankees Shore Up Infield, Acquire Drury From Diamondbacks In 3-Team Trade

MLB.com 2017 Prospect Watch | MLB.com

The New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks answered important lineup questions on Tuesday, completing a three-team, five-player trade with the Tampa Bay Rays that will net New York a needed infield option and Arizona a brand new outfielder. The Yankees dealt prospects Nick Solak to the Tampa Bay Rays and Taylor Widener to Arizona in the deal.

J.D. Martinez is now signed with the Boston Red Sox, so the Arizona Diamondbacks are looking elsewhere to strengthen the outfield.

The Yankees have agreed to a deal for second baseman Brandon Drury, a source confirmed to the News. That'll be key especially until top prospect Gleyber Torres is called up for good.

Drury, 25, has played a handful of positions in his brief major league career. He was a respectable.275/.323/.453 hitter during that time, adding 29 total home runs.

Drury doesn't have the upside of Starlin Castro, who was traded by NY in the Giancarlo Stanton trade over the winter, but he's now among the most solid and experienced infield options new manager Aaron Boone will have now entering the new season.

Gleyber Torres, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery to fix a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left (non-throwing) elbow, will get a shot to start at third base in spring training, while Miguel Andujar could open the year as the starting second baseman. This past season he had an OPS of.835 at the High-A and Double-A levels.

Anthony Banda, 24, got his first taste of the big leagues last season and struggled posting a 2-3 record with a 5.96 ERA.

Solak, 23, was the Yankees' second-round draft pick in 2016 and was rated by MLB.com as the eighth-best prospect in their farm system.
