Turkey rejects 'baseless' allegations of using chemical weapons in Syria's Afrin region

UN report on Afrin contradicted by facts on ground

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, after talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mehmet Cavusoglu, said a working group to tackle the differences will hold its first meeting by mid-March. But the joint statement issued Friday contained only anodyne affirmations of respect and a promise to keep talking.

Turkish forces immediately responded to the attack by targeting PYD/PKK positions in Afrin, Syria via air and land strikes.

Ankara views the the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) as the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militant group that has been fighting for an autonomous region inside Turkey since 1984.

Ankara is now prioritizing the implementation of decisions made in recent meetings between the US and Turkey, after heavy diplomatic traffic to address disagreements between the two sides over Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said. "That's where we're going". He said previous promises made to Turkey by the USA were broken, but that the two sides had "reached an understanding to normalize our relationship again". "We're going to work together moving forward". That means we're going to work through them.

The situation has triggered concern in Washington that the Erdogan government may be shifting increasingly toward an alignment with Russian Federation.

"Holding negotiations is surely valuable but we are most interested in results".

Turkey has denied the allegations that it used chemical weapons in its operation against the Kurdish fighters in Afrin city of Syria.

With the Iraqi army in shambles, the Americans reached out to the Kurdish militias, the only force in the region not aligned with Iran that was able and eager to fight. The countries remain at loggerheads in part over Washington's support of a Kurdish militia in Syria, which Ankara accuses of being a terrorist organization.

Operation Olive Branch was launched by Turkey on January 20 to remove the PKK/PYD/YPG/KCK and Daesh terrorists from Afrin in northwestern Syria.

"These are baseless accusations", Reuters quoted an unidentified Turkish official as saying. This time, newspapers were filled with references to the "Ottoman slap".

Tillerson said the first working group would deal with the issue of the town of Manbij, which is held by the USA -backed Syrian Kurdish militia and where the United States has a military presence. Cavusoglu accused Washington of failing to honor commitments that the YPG would withdraw after the capture of Manbij from Islamic State. "This is a commitment that the United States of America has made to us and we will be talking about how this implementation will be made".

Separately, an airstrike in northern Iraq's Hakurk region took place as the terrorist group PKK was preparing for attacks on Turkish patrols and bases in the region, said the military.

It also said that "1,614 terrorists" and 32 soldiers have been killed in the operation since it started a month ago.

Turkey says the United States has yet to honor several pledges: to stop arming the YPG, to take back arms after Islamic State was defeated in Syria, and to pull YPG forces back from Manbij, a Syrian town about 100 km (60 miles) east of Afrin.
