Apple Admits HomePods are Leaving White Stains on Wooden Tables

Siri Already Bumbling Just Got Less Intelligent on the HomePod

Early adopters of Apple's new £319 HomePod smart speaker have started complaining that the "new sound of home" is leaving white ring marks on wooden surfaces that are hard to remove.

The tech giant has said users may have to re-oil furniture if they move the speaker and the marks persist, after reports of white rings being left by the device surfaced.

If moving the speaker doesn't work, Apple advises wiping the surface gently with a soft damp or dry cloth may remove the marks. And, crucially, the HomePod also incorporates Apple's HomeKit software for home automation.

The possibility that the HomePod may damage wooden furniture adds to the growing list of problems that customers have with the Siri-powered smart speaker.

The company also recommends users to place the HomePod on solid surfaces and use it indoors only.

Early adopters of Apple's speaker-designed to compete with Amazon's line of Alexa-powered speakers and Google's family of Home speakers.

If tepid reviews weren't bad enough for the new smart speaker HomePod, Apple now has a new concern to deal with: Furniture damage.

The iPhone maker has since updated its HomePod support page to reflect the issue.

The Wirecutter and other publications cited the issue in its tests and now an Apple spokesperson has weighed in with a remarkable statement, admitting the flaw.

Apple has said the issue can be caused by a reaction between the speaker's silicone base and some polished wooden surfaces.

I can't imagine how my head would have popped if I found out that my new HomePod had marked up my wooden table after days or a month of use.

Wirecutter and Pocket-Lint weren't so lucky, though, with the latter noting that while the mark had faded some days later, it hasn't completely disappeared.

And while that's certainly not meagre, its competitors Google and Amazon make a whopping 66% and 56% profit off their respective smart speakers (the higher-end Home Max and Echo Plus), while also offering lower audio quality, according to TechInsight. Some users are anxious that the stain won't ever fade, ultimately destroying the furniture on which it's placed.

Notice a white ring on the wood furniture surface you've placed your HomePod on?
