Mikaela Shiffrin's PyeongChang wait continues as high winds delay women's slalom

In Pyeongchang, High Winds Are No Breeze for Athletes

The women's event was scheduled to start at Yongpyong Alpine Centre in PyeongChang, 180 kilometres east of Seoul, at 10:15 a.m on Monday but the organisers made a decision to postpone the event due to high winds and bad weather.

Snow was falling and wind blowing this way and that at Yongpyong on Wednesday.

The women's giant slalom, originally scheduled for Monday, is scheduled for Thursday, as is the men's downhill, which was originally scheduled for Sunday.

"So hopefully I can get another couple good days of training in and keep the ball rolling".

After several delays in the schedule, the event was eventually called off as the hurricane-like winds made it impossible for the athletes, including the United States rising star Mikaela Shiffrin, to compete in such weather conditions, reports Efe.

Now Friday will also be a double-competition day, with Shiffrin attempting to defend her 2014 gold medal in the slalom, which will be held at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre that hosts technical races, while the men compete in the super-G at the Jeongseon Alpine Center speed hill about 50 kilometres away. Slalom's second run is set for 1:45 p.m. local time (11:45 p.m. ET Wednesday).

This is the second time that the organising committee has rescheduled the alpine skiing competition due to bad weather. She has not been beaten in this event in the world stage winning all three world championships and her only Olympics appearance.

"We've been through this before in the World Cup quite often", said USA coach Paul Kristofic.

For now, though, she must wait to get in a starting gate, along with all the other Alpine skiers. "We have a great gym and space to eat and take plenty of naps, so I'll use this time to recharge".

Men and women shared race days at the 2006 Turin Olympics and 1998 Nagano Olympics, for example. She also won a FIS race at Levi in November. At last year's world championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland, the two downhills were back-to-back on the same hill.

The men's combined was on Tuesday won by Austria's Marcel Hirscher. Because wind could again present problems, Waldner said, three of the downhill's four jumps were adjusted so skiers wouldn't fly as high in the air. Already facing a bit of a time crunch because of all of the weather issues, organizers kept pushing back the first run of the two-run slalom until eventually deciding to call it off about an hour after the start time.
