Bomber gets life in prison for two attacks

Ahmad Khan Rahimi an Afghan-born U.S. citizen accused of planting bombs in New York and New Jersey appears in Union County Superior Court for a hearing in Elizabeth New Jersey

"After two months, they say, 'Your son is not doing any act like a terrorist, '" Rahimi. said "I said, 'You sure he not doing anything?' He say, 'Yeah, is good news'".

Federal Judge Richard Berman, who presided over the trial, imposed the sentence Tuesday in NY.

"We intend to appeal", Rahimi's attorney, Xavier Donaldson, said outside of the courthouse here, after the hearing.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi, a naturalized US citizen born in Afghanistan, was criticized by a prosecutor for failing to show remorse and was scolded by a victim for not apologizing to the 30 people he injured.

Rahimi wasn't charged with terrorism, but his father, Mohammad Rahimi, said he contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to warn that his son may have been radicalized and the agency informed him his son wasn't engaged in terrorist behavior.

Jurors took less than four hours to convict Rahimi on eight counts, including using a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a public place, following a two-week trial.

"Ahmad Khan Rahimi will spend the rest of his life behind bars", said FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr.

Federal prosecutors said in court papers that Rahimi has not shown remorse and tried to radicalize fellow prisoners at the federal jail in NY where he has been imprisoned since his arrest.

Rahimi "has been attempting to radicalize fellow inmates in the Metropolitan Correction Center by, among other things, distributing propaganda and publications issued by terrorist organizations", according to a letter from then-Acting US Attorney Joon H. Kim to Judge Berman. A second pressure cooker bomb was found a few blocks away, on 27th Street, but it didn't detonate.

Rahimi, a naturalized US citizen who was born in Afghanistan, was arrested after a gunfight with New Jersey police, who found he was carrying a journal with praise for Islamic terrorists and promises of violence. Rahimi also placed a bomb in a garbage can at the finish line of a United States Marine Corps charity race in Seaside Park, N.J., but the start time was delayed and no one was injured when the bomb exploded.

Police arrested Rahimi on September 19, 2016, after a shootout outside the Linden, New Jersey, doorway where Rahimi had been sleeping.

The bomber's father has said his son was remorseful and thankful that no one was killed in the explosions. Rahimi and two police officers were wounded in the shootout.

The next day when returning to New Jersey Rahimi left a backpack containing six pipe bombs in a New Jersey train station and one exploded after being detonated by a police robot, but caused no injuries.
