More jobs created in Saskatchewan: Stats Canada

A worker in Ontario

According to Statistics Canada's monthly labour force survey, there were 5,000 more people working in the region in January as there were 192,700 people employed last month compared with 187,700 at the same time past year.

For Ontario, some experts raised the possibility of a link between the provincial drop and the introduction last month of a controversial minimum-wage hike.

The rate still sits higher than New Zealand's lowest-ever unemployment level of 3.3 per cent, recorded just before the global financial crisis.

As for part-time employment, Saskatchewan had about 5,000 fewer jobs. Shenfeld also commented that while the job losses took away from the job gains made previous year, " the details also looking wonky, with all of the job losses in part-time work".

The latest labour force survey showed 4,900 more full-time jobs when compared to January 2017.

To partially offset the declines, Statistics Canada said the economy added 49,000 full-time positions last month. Ontario lost 51,000 jobs in January, entirely due to losses in part-time work.

By region, the agency said Ontario and Quebec saw the biggest decreases last month, while New Brunswick and Manitoba also had net losses.

By comparison, the number of people who identified as self-employed workers - often seen as a less desirable category that includes unpaid work in a family business - increased last month by 23,900. The province said the gain was led by jobs in the transportation and warehousing industries. The unemployment rate in Alberta also fell by 1.7 percent, to 7.0 percent.

With files from The Canadian Press. BMO Financial Group chief economist Doug Porter said the January figure brings the job market "back down to Earth". He said it reinforces the view that the Bank of Canada will proceed "ultra-cautiously" through the rest of 2018.
