Ayodhya dispute: Our priority is to join hearts of people, says AIMPLB

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board today said the land dedicated for Masjid can not be sold, gifted or in any way alienated, reiterating its earlier stand on the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute.

The Supreme Court of India will commence the final hearing in Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute case from March 14.

When a lawyer sought the court's permission to intervene in the matter saying it involved the faith of crores of Hindus, the bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer said: "We can't address these kind of arguments".

What the bench appeared to be attempting was to divest the heated dispute over ownership of the 2.77 acre core site of political considerations by making it clear that cases be settled on evidence and not a long history attached to them or inherent communal overtones.

The bench also refused to entertain applications for interventions, observing that the five suits were capable of handling the case.

In total the court is hearing 13 appeals that have been filed against the 2010 judgment of the Allahabad high court in four civil suits. But the court found that despite its December 5 order, the pleadings were not yet complete to allow the case to be ripe for commencement of hearing. The Allahabad High Court isolated the disputed site in Ayodhya between Nirmohi Akhara, Ram Lalla and Sunni Waqf Board. He also said that it is the government's prerogative about what it wants to do with the triple talaq and he has nothing to do with that.

Ravi Shankar had also, in November last, met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who then said "everyone knows where the talks would lead to", especially when the matter is pending before the Supreme Court.

The top court asked all parties to file English translation of documents relied upon in two weeks and posted the matter for March 14. He pointed out that the CJI sitting on Constitution benches had been breaking the bench frequently to attend to other matters as well and added that this would not work in the case of the present appeals.

Rehmani, however, said the Board will abide by the Supreme Court's decision in the matter.

"At least 700 cases involving ordinary citizens can be disposed of in 25 days if the court deals with them for about an hour-and-a-half", Justice Misra said.
