Kenyan Broadcasters Back On Air After Government Block

Some of those affected include Moses Wetangula Johnson Muthama and economist David Ndii – who advises Odinga among others FILE

They all covered this new chapter in Kenya's political drama.Activists demonstrate in the streets of Nairobi on Monday against the shutdown of several TV channels over their opposition coverage.

"The government allowed the event to take place", Linus Kaikai, managing editor of Kenya's Nation Media Group, told Al Jazeera last week.

Rights activist Njonjo Mue said Monday the peaceful demonstration with about 100 protesters was to express outrage against the government's "blatant violation of the constitution".

Odinga's symbolic inauguration in the heart of the capital of East Africa's wealthiest economy was intended as a direct challenge to Kenyatta.

Global media stations from around the globe on Monday highlighted the government's defiance to keep the stations off-air, despite a court order to restore broadcast.

An Odinga ally, Miguna has declared himself a leader of the opposition's National Resistance Movement, which the government this week declared a criminal group.

The government had shut down transmission of the four popular TV channels last week when they attempted to broadcast the mock inauguration of opposition leader Raila Odinga as the "people's president".

Odinga claims he, not President Uhuru Kenyatta, is the real victor of a presidential election held in August but later nullified by the Supreme Court on procedural grounds.

It follows the arrest on Wednesday of an opposition lawmaker who administered Odinga's "oath".

A well-known TV news anchor said last week that he and two other journalists were forced to spend the night in their newsroom to avoid arrest. He was granted bail of 50,000 Kenyan shillings ($500) but has remained in police custody with his whereabouts unknown - something Kenya's lawyers' association said breached his rights. The opposition claims the original vote was rigged and that electoral reforms were not made after the Supreme Court nullified the election and ordered a fresh one.
