Amtrak Train Investigation Underway, Victims Families Dealing with Aftermath

Multiple injuries feared after train crashes and derails in South Carolina

An Amtrak train en route from NY to Miami collided with a CSX freight train and derailed near Columbia, South Carolina, leaving two dead and 116 injured, police and Amtrak officials said.

Officials from both companies expressed condolences to the families of the two people killed, an Amtrak engineer and a conductor.

The Amtrak train event recorder found that seven seconds before the crash, the train's horn was activated as it traveled 56 miles per hour down the track.

The Amtrak train was traveling from NY to Miami when it crashed into that freight train in Cayce, South Carolina.

The passengers were on an Amtrak train that slammed into a freight train that authorities say was parked on a side track near Cayce around 2:45 a.m. Sunday.

A passenger told ABC News that he and his wife were in a sleeper auto near the back of the train when the crash occurred. The NTSB said it was working to confirm that.

The federal government has been moving to institute what is known as "positive train control, " a system that would warn speeding trains of upcoming dangers.

"That's what it's created to do", he said, referring to technology that regulators have been pressing for for decades with mixed success. I mean, two trains - that's about as forceful as you can get. He later said that it was unclear from where the fuel had leaked.

Over 100 of the 139 passengers aboard the Amtrak train were transported to area hospitals; two of those individuals are reportedly in critical condition, while the majority sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Palmetto Health spokeswoman Tammie Epps says 62 passengers were seen at three of its hospitals.

The first engine of the freight train was torn up, he said, and the engine of the train, Train 91, was "barely recognizable". According to McMaster, there were multiple train tracks at the location of the crash. "Did this just happen?'" she said.

Amtrak said it was "cooperating fully" with the NTSB investigation.

Amtrak said in a statement that the collision took place around 2:35 Cayce, South Carolina. That train then returned to the main track and backed into the siding, Sumwalt said. CSX maintains all of the tracks and signal systems.
