Amazon Prime Exclusive phones remove lockscreen ads

Now, the biggest advertising surface on the phones, the lock screen, is being scrubbed of advertising. Think about it. You pick up your iPhone X, and bam, you're in your phone.

This change is a response to different technologies available to unlock devices, like facial recognition. The same thing goes for speedy fingerprint sensors.

The question now is: "What does the future of Amazon's cheap phone program look like?"

Amazon announced the news today, stating that on February 7, 2018, Prime Exclusive Phones will be available without lockscreen offers and ads. Currently, you have to press a fingerprint sensor twice on these phones to unlock. So, going forward, devices sold through the program will no longer come with the ads. For those devices already out in the world, updates will start rolling out next week that remove the ads. Now, with a fresh software update that'll begin rolling out tomorrow, you won't see any ads on the lock screen at all.

Amazon's Prime Exclusive Phone line-up has always been one to consider while simultaneously wanting to throw-up. The phones will still be heavily discounted, though.

Consumers looking for a deal on a smartphone have been able to save anywhere from $25 to $100 off the retail price by buying them from Amazon, as long as they didn't mind being forced to watch lock screen ads. However, like Amazon's Kindle devices, customers could opt out from the ads by paying more. "With a single sign-on experience, Prime Exclusive Phones provide Prime members quick and easy access to their Prime benefits through a pre-installed selection of popular Amazon apps". Of course, you'll still be left with Amazon's Android apps, a dedicated widget, and a few notifications that all show adverts, but at least you won't be greeted by them every time you check your phone.
