Black unemployment jumped in January up from record low

Kente Saves Ghana From President Trump’s Shithole Concept During His State Of The Nation's Address

The unemployment rate among black Americans spiked in January to 7.7 percent - dealing a blow to President Trump's message after he touted December's number as "the lowest rate ever recorded".

As the Economic Policy Institute notes, this data can be volatile because of a small sample size used to derive it.

That hike - from 6.8% to 7.7% - comes after black unemployment plummeted to the lowest point in history in December after having been slashed almost in half during President Obama's second term. When one segment of America does well, hopefully all segments do well - although Trump's policies favor the wealthy, and trickle down economics is a fraud.

The demeanor of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) during Trump's State of the Union address made headlines on Tuesday - with many sharing images, GIFs and video clips on social media of the top Democrat looking unimpressed by Trump's words.

"It's not about money at the end of the day", the rapper said. "That's the main point".

But Democrats have refused to credit Trump for the statistical feat because they say his policies have nothing to do with it, adding that black unemployment has been on a steady decline for years.

In December, the unemployment rate for African Americans fell to an historic low of 6.8%. "It's something I'm very proud of. You would have thought that on that one, they would have sort of at least clapped a little bit", Trump added.

The unemployment rate for Blacks in America jumped from 6.8% to 7.7%, almost a full percentage point higher.

In January, white unemployment was 3.5 percent, down from 3.7 percent in December, and Asian unemployment was 3 percent, up from 2.5 percent in the December report, according to CNBC.
