International Olympic Committee mistakenly invited banned Russian to Olympics as coach

28 Russians have Olympic doping bans lifted

Twenty-eight Russian athletes have had their Olympic doping bans overturned by the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Last month, the International Olympic Committee banned Russia's Olympic team from the 2018 Games after a yearlong investigation into systematic doping by Russian athletes. The athletes cleared by IOC will not participate as a Russian designated team in the event but under the neutral tag of "Olympic Athletes from Russia".

The CAS ruling, however, puts Russian Federation back on top of the overall medal count for the 2014 Sochi Games.

The42 has just published its first book, Behind The Lines, a collection of some of the year's best sports stories.

All 39 appeals were heard in Geneva last week with all but two athletes attending in person - though the pair were heard via video link.

Putin at a meeting with the athlethes, said Russian Federation will support the idea of clean sports.

Walden told AFP the ruling was "unfortunate" and suggested it "provides a very small measure of punishment for some athletes but a complete "get out of jail free card" for most".

Those talks continue to be cause for hope that inter-Korean tensions can ease.

CAS's verdict drew a whithering response from Jim Walden, the lawyer of doping whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov.

Over little more than two weeks from the opening of the Olympiad next Friday, a total of 110,000 contraceptive sheaths will be distributed, 10,000 more than at Vancouver in 2010 or Sochi in 2014.

"It will all happen here in this place, in this Olympic Village", Bach said. All of them were retroactively disqualified from the Sochi games over the doping allegations.

About 11 other athletes were confirmed by CAS to have committed doping violations.

The IOC in December also banned Russian Federation from the Olympics in Pyeongchang, citing its "unprecedented systematic manipulation" of the Olympic anti-doping system.

In December the International Olympic Committee banned Russia from competing in Pyeongchang, but 169 Russians have since been invited to take part as neutrals. The IOC still has to approve the decision regarding the medals.

Russian athletes won't be allowed to display the flag in Pyeongchang, or to celebrate with Russian flags given by fans. The IOC has required Russians to compete in uniforms without national symbols and bars them from gestures like taking a national flag from spectators to celebrate.
