Vladimir Putin says Russian Federation hopes to turn page on doping at Olympics

Putin at a meeting with the athlethes, said Russian Federation will support the idea of clean sports. Putin also repeated a claim he made last month that Rodchenkov, who is under witness protection in the United States and says he fears for his life, is "under the control of the US special services". However, Putin said Russian Federation would continue to work with global sports organizations.

Putin "reminded the cabinet of the decision to organise a competition for those of our athletes who had not been allowed to take part in the Olympic Games", Russian news agencies quoted Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.

Putin said that should the Olympic movement lose its important component of uniting countries, everything will lose its meaning.

The 2018 Winter Olympics are nearly upon us & we have a run down of everything you need to know to get prepared for the awesome winter games!

However, Putin continued to portray Russian Federation as a victim of political intrigue created to tarnish the good name of its athletes. "We believe it indicates South Korea's support to Russia's Olympic team", Timonin said.

Additionally, Thomas Bach, the president of International Olympic Committee, revealed that there will actually be a special ceremony to re-distribute the medals that were awarded at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Among them are speed skaters Ivan Skobrev, a two-time medalist at the Vancouver 2010 Games, and Artem Kuznetcov.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport are due to announce their verdict tomorrow on the hearings of 39 Russian athletes banned from Pyeongchang 2018.

Earlier in DEcember, the International Olympic Committee banned Russian Federation from next year's Pyeongchang Winter Olympics for what it called "unprecedented systematic manipulation" of the anti-doping system.

He reserved scathing remarks for Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory who described running a doping program and cover-ups over several years on orders from Russian government officials.

"Despite the attempts by global sports officials [to bar Russia from the Games], our athletes will come to PyeongChang to demonstrate their high professionalism and the strength and might of Russian sport".
