Vaping May Be As Bad As Smoking For Your DNA

Vaping may raise cancer and heart disease risk, study suggests

Experts at the New York University carried out the research which involved exposing a human and mice bladder and lung cells to e-cig smoke and watching what damage it caused. Researchers from the New York University School of Medicine found that vaping is risky and hence should not be promoted as safe, despite being less harmful than smoking. Norman states, "this study shows us that e-cigarettes should work as part of a supply reduction strategy; increase the price discrepancy between tobacco to harm reduction products like e-cigarettes, decrease tobacco availability and increase harm reduction options". However, the results of this study may take several years to determine.

Researchers, headed by Professor of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, Alan Hacsuos, of the University of London School of Cardiology (UCL), who published the publication in the British medical journal, studied (meta-analysis) the findings of 141 investigations 1946-2015 and calculated the risk of smoking one, five or 20 cigarettes.

'In terms of safety, e-cigarettes are likely far closer to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

The long and short of it is that vaping with nicotine might increase the risk of cancer, although it's safer than smoking tobacco. They are often deemed the "safe" alternative to cigarettes and recent analysis has also shown that people who vape contain 97% less of the lung carcinogen NNAL in their lungs than regular smokers.

"E-cigarette smoking may act as a gateway to the more harmful tobacco smoking."

Tang exposed mice to e-cigarette smoke for three hours a day, five days a week for three months. The findings also support bids to regulate e-cigarettes based on their tobacco-like effects, such as the FDA's former approach. This amounted to what Hajek called "extremely large doses of nicotine". Nicotine inhaled from e-cigarettes could be converted into chemicals that damage DNA in the heart, lungs and bladder, according to the study. Natural DNA fix mechanisms were also suppressed in the mice exposed to the smoke.

The study was published January 29 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "We need to actively address these misperceptions about the risks of e-cigarettes, which can have real-world consequences for public health", Kaleechurn said. Kadimisetty said, "I never expected the DNA damage from e-cigarettes to be equal to tobacco cigarettes".

"Up to two-thirds of long term smokers will die due to their addiction, but e-cigarettes don't contain tobacco".
