US Market Indexes Report Another Day of Losses

Reuters

Several big-name companies are due to report quarterly results on Wednesday and Thursday, including Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook and Google's parent company Alphabet. Health insurer UnitedHealth fell 4.3 percent, the most among Dow components, while Cigna's 6.4 percent drop was the biggest on the S&P 500.

Although the recent uptick in bond yields has prompted some analysts to question how much longer relatively risky stocks will remain attractive relative to Treasurys, some investors say the moves have yet to pose a threat to the stock rally. "Yes, but not to the point where we see the Fed has to be aggressive", said Michael Hans, chief investment officer of Clarfeld Financial Advisors.

The Dow Jones index is a measure of the value of 30 of America's largest public companies and the S&P 500 measures the 500 largest.

United States stocks spent most of January on a almost uninterrupted climb to ever-higher records, but have fallen this week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was retreating sharply lower on Tuesday, with the blue-chip gauge on pace for its worst single-session decline in about 8 months. The Nasdaq dropped 0.9 percent, to 7,402.48.

It measures the daily stock price movements of 30 large, publicly-owned USA companies.

Eversource Energy fell $1.63, or 2.5%, to $62.44, while CenterPoint Energy lost 73 cents, or 2.6%, to 27.73.

On Monday, the U.S. 10-year treasury yield hit 2.73%, the highest level since April 2014.

Wall Street also observed the sovereign bondsmarket as the standard 10-year yield gave away above 2.7%.

Among earnings, Pfizer shares fell 3.3 percent. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index plunged by 1.4%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index slumped by 1.1%.

The Australian dollar was weaker across the board, falling 0.1 per cent to 80.8 U.S. cents. Of the companies that have reported, about 80 per cent have beaten Wall Street expectations. Mr. Wynn has denied the allegations.

About 7.1 billion shares changed hands on USA exchanges.

US Treasury yields climbed to multi-year highs after the start of the Federal Reserve's two-day meeting, which could shed light on the central bank's economic and rate hike outlook.
