Rep. Gowdy Announces He Will Not Seek Reelection

Another GOP Chairman To Retire: Trey Gowdy Announces He's Done

Another one bites the dust!

Representative Trey Gowdy, chairman of the House Oversight committee, will not run for re-election this November, he announced on Wednesday, becoming the latest high-profile Republican to retire from Congress.

Gowdy became the chairman of the House Oversight Committee after Utah's Jason Chaffetz (who hasn't ruled out a return to government office) left Congress in June of a year ago.

The Benghazi panel revealed the existence of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's private email server and controversies involving it proved to be damaging to her failed 2016 presidential bid.

Now, Gowdy is a key member of one of the Russian Federation probes in Congress and the leader of a renewed investigation into the FBI and Clinton's emails.

Gowdy, who is finishing his fourth term, was first elected in 2010 after a contentious battle with former Rep. Unlike many others, however, Gowdy was not facing a hard re-election campaign in 2018.

Gowdy did not have to account for such factors when making his decision, which made his decision all the more surprising.

The high-ranking Republican released an official statement through his office, announcing his impending retirement; adding the GOP lawmaker "enjoys our justice system more than our political system". "To those across SC and our country who, over the past 7 years have expressed words of encouragement, accountability, and even criticism; thank you".

Rep. Trey Gowdy ( R-S.C), pictured on Capitol Hill on January 18, is chairman of the House Oversight Committee. "All are needed for those in public service", Gowdy said.

In closed-door interviews, he has been the chief questioner for the Republicans on the committee, relying on his prosecutorial experience to cross examine numerous witnesses.
