CJI, two rebel judges shake hands in public

Justice S N Shukla’s profile on the website of the Allahabad High Court

In August 2017, Shukla passed an order granting permission to one such medical college to admit students, despite a Supreme Court order restraining such action.

Following the panel's indictment, CJI Misra had reportedly advised Justice Shukla to either resign or take voluntary retirement. The CJI formed a three-member committee, comprising Chief Justices Indira Banerjee of the Madras High Court and S.K. Agnihotri of the Sikkim High Court and Justice P.K. Jaiswal of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, to examine his conduct.

The Congress today lauded CJI Dipak Mishra for taking a "principled position" in the case of Allahabad High Court judge Justice S N Shukla, who has been found guilty of misconduct by an internal probe into a medical college admission scam.

The college was barred from admitting students for two years - 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. The PE, portions of which have been accessed by The Indian Express, states that "Source has informed that Shri I".

Sources familiar with the matter said that justice Shukla has not been attending the high court since the last week as all judicial work has been taken away from him.

Earlier in the day, reports said that the government has rejected a recommendation to elevate senior advocate Indu Malhotra and Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice K M Joseph as judges of the apex court.

What was supposed to be a formal function for release of a newsletter of the Supreme Court bar Association on Tuesday (January 30), a bonus for everybody was a possible sign of melting ice between Chief Justice Dipak Misra and the four "rebel" judges.

The case of 32 colleges is included in the in-house inquiry report.

Justice (retired) Quddusi was a judge in the Orissa High Court between 2004 and 2010. This followed an MCI report on their substandard infrastructural facilities and failure to meet the required criteria.

The issue of who got to hear a PIL demanding an SIT probe into the medical education scam led the CJI to reaffirm his power as the ultimate arbiter of allocation of cases to benches - one of the triggers for the unrest among four seniormost judges and their unprecedented press conference.
