Apple questioned by U.S. agencies about slowing iPhones

iOS apps on Mac computers are still likely to appear in 2018

A report from Bloomberg claims that the U.S. government has requested information from Apple and is looking into public statements made by the company pertaining to the situation.

The inquiry is in early stages, and it's too soon to conclude if any enforcement will follow, the report said.

Then on Wednesday, ZDNet's sister-site CNET received a statement from Apple acknowledging it has "received questions from some government agencies", and is in the process of responding to those questions.

Keep in mind Apple has faced a lot of criticism lately for bugs in iOS updates and how it uses those same updates to throttle older iPhones with aging batteries.

So far, the DOJ and SEC have requested information from Apple.

A group of plaintiffs in Russian Federation is reportedly planning to take Apple to court after the company admitted it had been reducing the processing speed of aging iPhones.

"We've been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process", the statement read.

Our latest consensus estimates show that analysts expect Apple to report total iPhone unit sales of 79.791 million, which would represent a 1.9% gain from the 78.290 million witnessed in the year-ago quarter. That 50% decline is steep, but seems to mesh with other reports indicating that Apple's premium 10-year anniversary edition is not selling well. Some Apple fans believe that the company released the software update to get them to upgrade to newer iPhones, leading to lawsuits.

To answer user concerns, Apple announced it was offering owners of an iPhone 6 or later the chance to replace batteries at a reduced cost.

"We don't confirm or deny investigations", a representative for the Department of Justice said on Tuesday.

For its part, Apple has apologized to customers over the software update and dropped the price of battery replacements. High consumer satisfaction ratings may mean that Apple's risks paid off, and may lead the Cupertino giant to return to its formerly high pace of innovation with its future models. Users will be able to turn off the performance limitation option, but it's a course of action the company doesn't recommend.

CEO Tim Cook said the new update is "going to give people the visibility of the health of their battery so it's very, very transparent".
