Trans Women Forced to Shave Their Heads by Indonesian Officials

Indonesian police in Aceh province cut hair of transgender women

Police in the Indonesian province of Aceh arrested 12 transgender women on saturday, forcing them to strip off their shirts and then shaving their heads in public.

The transgender women, who were also forced to wear men's clothes, will be held for three days.

The currency wholesaler in the money-changing industry is a parent agency that distributes cash to other outlets.

"Cutting the hair of those arrested to "make them masculine" and forcing them to dress like men are forms of public shaming and amount to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, in contravention of Indonesia's worldwide obligations", Amnesty global Indonesia's Executive Director Usman Hamid said in a statement published on the group's website.

Footage of the police raid was posted online, purportedly showing the police chief addressing a distressed woman, presumably transgender, in front of a beauty salon. "It's going well and now they are all acting like real men", Local police chief Ahmad Untung Surianata told the BBC.

"The North Aceh police should immediately and unconditionally release the 12 trans women".

The Aceh police operation drew criticism from Amnesty International. The chief said the women were then taken to a police station for "further guidance" and that the action was meant to keep transgender people from "adversely affecting" younger Indonesians, CNN reports.

Indonesia has seen its authorities implement a crackdown on the LGBT community.

"The police's so-called "re-education" of transgender people is not only humiliating and inhumane, it is also unlawful and a clear breach of their human rights", Amnesty International Indonesia director Usman Hamid told The Guardian.

As they were taken to the police station, the transgender employees were apparently approached by dozens of locals who tried to attack them.

Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that has strict Islamic religious law. The province enjoys a special status and has had the right to enforce sharia law alongside the national criminal code since the 2000s as part of a deal between the central government and local separatists.

But a draft, seen by Reuters on Monday, included measures to criminalise extramarital sex, same-sex relations, and co-habitation, all of which were previously unregulated by law. Police have also repeatedly conducted massive raids at suspected "gay parties" detaining large group of men.
