8 talking points from the Oscar nominations

Oscar Nominees 2018

"For 25 years, I've been preaching that the dark poetry and emotion of my stories are fairytales for modern times", Mexican director del Toro told Reuters. (That's what's going on in the chart above.) This year, the front-runner is easy to spot: With a major win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and more cumulative points than six of the previous 10 winners (at this point in the Oscars race), 1997 best actress victor McDormand is a clear favorite.

SURPRISE: Paul Thomas Anderson for "Phantom Thread": It feels weird to call it a surprise that an acclaimed filmmaker like Anderson got a nomination for Best Director, but in such a competitive field, not many awards analysts expected him to sneak in and take a nod for his work immersing audiences in Reynolds Woodcock's meticulous world.

Fellow Brit Jacqueline Durran (pictured) is also up against herself in the best costume design category, for the same two movies.

Peele is also the first person of color to earn best picture, best directing and best original screenplay nods for the same film, and the third person overall to be honored with that trifecta.

Guillermo del Toro meanwhile, has become the fourth Latino director to be nominated.

The film hit Mexican cinemas two weekends ago, rising to the top of the domestic box office and earning 61.2 million pesos (just under U.S. $3.5 million) on its opening weekend.

Campaigning for the 90th Academy Awards has been going on in Hollywood for five months, with films falling over themselves to claim the cultural zeitgeist.

Get Out, centred on an interracial couple, received four nominations, including for best picture and best actor. But, she is the first woman in history to be nominated for her debut.

But Fox Searchlight's quirky "Three Billboards", about an angry woman seeking justice for her daughter's murder, has dominated Hollywood's awards season so far, winning the top prize at the influential Screen Actors Guild awards on Sunday.

Veteran actor Meryl Streep received her 21st Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Katherine Graham in Steven Spielberg's newspaper drama, "The Post" in the Best Actress category. The film's writer and director, Jordan Peele, is also nominated for Best Director, and the film's star, Daniel Kaluuya, is nominated for Best Actor.

There were plenty of talking points from this year's Oscar nominations. Just previous year, voters overlooked Casey Affleck's past settlements with women who accused him of sexual harassment to name him best actor.

With Mary J. Blige (Mudbound) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water) in the Supporting Actress category (along with Kaluuya and Washington in Best Actor), a fifth of the 20 nominated actors are black. The film has also scored a nomination for Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling for Oldman's astounding transformation to the British Prime Minister.

Sound Mixing: "Baby Driver", "Blade Runner 2049", "Dunkirk", "The Shape of Water", "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". And it's not easy to be an exception-ask Sidney Poitier, who said, in 1964, "Ever since I won the Oscar, the only questions the press seems to be interested in are what my feelings and actions are about civil-rights movements".

The Shape of Water is now the probable favorite.
