Facebook selfie nails murder probe of 21-year-old in Canada

Woman sentenced for manslaughter in teen friend's death

Antoine's connection with the throttling was only confirmed after police connected the dots from that photo to Gargol's death.

Brittney Gargol's murder isn't the first time Facebook has influenced a murder case.

Antoine has now been found guilty of manslaughter thanks to the image of the pair together.

Camera IconCheyenne Rose Antoine (left) has been jailed for strangling best friend Brittney Gargol (right) with the belt she's wearing in this photo.

Police in the Canadian city of Saskatoon say a selfie posted on Facebook was instrumental in solving a murder investigation that spanned almost two years. Haven't heard from you.

She wrote later that night on Gargol's Facebook page: "Where are you? I miss her so much".

But police soon began to think those posts were only a ruse to throw them off Antoine's trail. "Looking forward to that day I see you again". Nothing I say or do will ever bring her back. In that selfie, Antoine was wearing a belt that matched one found next to Gargol's body.

But police noticed Gargol wearing the belt in the last picture her friend had shared online and it was eventually found near Gargol's body. Brittney Gargol, with auburn hair draped across her shoulder, produces an upturned smirk. It has since been changed by her family.

She then told the police that the pair had gone to several bars, but security footage showed that neither of them were at Colonial Pub and Grill, a bar that Antoine claimed they had gone to.

According to Antoine, she and Gargol were best friends who had been out drinking when they got into an argument. She was later sentenced to seven years of imprisonment on Monday.

Crown prosecutor Robin Ritter outlined the complicated investigation to the court.

Antoine doesn't remember strangling her best friend to death, her defense attorney said. It later became the key piece of evidence in her murder conviction.

Her criminal record began with vehicle theft at age 12, two years before she reconnected with her mother, the station reported. Her lawyer argued that the girl was deeply involved in drug and alcohol abuse after being sexually abuse by her foster father.

At that point, she began moving between relatives, group homes and other institutions. She "has issues...and because of those issues she is unsafe", the CBC reported. That friend dropped a dime on Antoine.
