Meteor Lights Up Sky Over Troy, Michigan

Meteor spotted across Illinois causes magnitude 2 earthquake

At around 8.10 pm local time, residents witnessed an extremely bright light illuminating the sky and heard a boom sound. Many people thought it to be a case of usual lightning and thunder.

The National Weather Service and United States Geological Survey confirmed that a meteor lit up the skies across MI and in several other states on Tuesday night.

The US National Weather Service (NWS) have confirmed they suspect a meteor to be likely behind the extraordinary scene.

"It could turn out to be just winter lightning", he says.

"It looks like from videos and reports we've gotten [that it's a] meteor", said Jordan Dale, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake, in an interview with Detroit Free Press.

In Allen Park, Michigan, one camera captured the bright streak going across the sky and then fading out.

On Tuesday and early Wednesday, social media users posted videos from dashboard cameras and home surveillance systems showing the moment the meteor burst into light.

NASA says the speed and brightness of the meteor indicate it was likely a yard across before it broke apart in the atmosphere.

"That is a fireball that has a bright flash and it explodes", he said.

Cooke said the fireball was caused by a small asteroid about one to two yards in diameter, moving at 28,000 miles per hour.

"It certainly was incredibly bright, it nearly felt like daytime there for just a brief second", Narlock said of his experience with the meteor.

Residents received a text alert from Ingham County Emergency Management Update saying that calling 911 is not necessary because while an explosion was heard, there is no account of something landing on the ground. A surface natural disaster means the loud sound many residents reported could have produced a "shock wave", causing vibrations across the ground or lake, or the quake came from the meteor's impact.
