'Jumanji' Powers Solid Holiday Weekend With $35.4 Million

'Jumanji' Poised to Repeat as Box Office Champ

Welcome to the Jungle is the No. 1 movie in North America for a second weekend, earning an additional $27 million in receipts, BoxOfficeMojo.com announced Sunday. Fun fact: Jumanji earned $100 million in 1995, an number that adjusts to $204.2 million in today's dollars, and Welcome to the Jungle has blown that away.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle enjoyed a second week atop the USA box office, holding off challenges from Steven Spielberg's The Post, Liam Neeson actioner The Commuter, and the marmalade and sterling snaffling British blockbuster, Paddington 2.

Last week's other big awards winners, Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water and Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, both did in the $3 million range as Fox Searchlight (distributor of both films) re-expanded the latter into over 1,000 theaters.

Fox and "The Post" will hope the strong box office results help resuscitate the film's Oscar momentum. This is an okay start for his latest action thriller. It's clear that after the success of the Taken series, Neeson is still cashing in by taking parts as Old Guy Action Hero.

While it placed at number six in the box office race, the film continues to be a worldwide phenomenon. Warner. Bros.' launch of family comedy "Paddington 2" finished sixth with $15 million, in line with the lower end of forecasts and just ahead of Universal's second weekend of "Insidious: The Last Key" with $14.6 million at 3,150 venues. And hey, it's still the #1 movie of 2018 for those who enjoy small sample sizes.

"The Greatest Showman" stars the popular Hugh Jackman in the lead role, and tells the story of larger-than-life circus impresario P.T. Barnum. This weekend, the musical added $11.8 million, down just 14% from last weekend, and gives it $94.5 million after four weekends. The movie has been recognized with several awards nominations, though actual wins have been rarer (it was shut out at the Golden Globes). The action-comedy, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, has won the first two weekends of 2018 after debuting December 20 in the shadow of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" - and began significantly outperforming forecasts.

'Jumanji' Poised to Repeat as Box Office Champ

Currently playing in 174 locations, Sony Pictures Classics' Call Me by Your Name took in $942,000, with its domestic total now standing at $7.4 million. Coming in second, it placed ahead of "Paddington 2", "Proud Mary" and "The Commuter". $13.7 million over the three-day weekend and $16.4 million including Monday to take third place.

China is now the world's second biggest movie market after the US.

Word of mouth aside, this one isn't likely to finish great. With DC Rebirth continuing to go strong and Marvel seguing over to Legacy after last year's disappointing Secret Empire event, the comic book landscape seems to be moving in the right direction. On a $30 million budget, overseas box office should be able to push this one into the black for Lionsgate.

Pitch Perfect 3 brought in $5.7 million in its fourth weekend, down 45%.

Having already passed $500 million in the global box office, according to Variety, the well-advertised film has been a hit.
