Why Facebook Inc (FB) Should Exit The News Business Entirely

Most people prefer to consume news in

Facebook stock took a hit after the social network announced massive changes to its news feed.

"As we roll this out, you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media", he stated.

"We expect competition for views and engagement within Facebook to increase and this is great news as the quality of content users see in their Facebook news feed will definitely improve", he said.

"'I'm telling you, that world existed long before Facebook, ' Brown said, and recommended that users who want to be challenged cultivate a diverse range of ideological perspectives on their feeds".

In a follow-up to show that Zuckerberg's actions match his words, Facebook last week announced that it will make sweeping changes to how the "News Feed" is presented to its approximately 2 billion users worldwide. "Facebook will be back primarily in the business of making us feel awful about the inferiority of our vacations, the relative mediocrity of our children, teasing us into sharing more of our private selves".

The changes come as the company faces criticism that social media can make people feel depressed and isolated.

"But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable", he added. These interactions on a post can be shares, comments, messages, reactions, or likes on content.

He noted that these changes are part of other refinements the Facebook team has been making over the past year, including penalizing engagement bait and encouraging users to join groups.

The prospect didn't appear to weigh too heavily on Global News, an early and frequent adopter of Facebook as a distribution channel. What Zuckerberg does not seem to have taken into account is the fact that the way the Facebook algorithm works right now, the virality of a piece of content is treated as its credibility.

"While we are a dominant news publisher on Facebook, we also employ strategies for diverse social media referral so as not to be dependent on any one source", said Ron Waksman, vice president of digital and editorial standards and practices for Global News and Corus Radio.

"Mosseri said Facebook will 'continue to value publisher content, '" said the CNN article.

The positive side of Facebook's changes could be a boost for influencers who genuinely are sparking debate: who have interesting things to say and an engaged community of fans discussing them.

In our conversation, [VP of News Feed Adam Mosseri] cited Oprah's recent Golden Globes speech as content that would fare better in the revamped feed. The platform decides for the users the content they may want to engage with (do I smell intellectual bias here?). That has enabled the platform to quickly acquire hundreds of millions of users. Facebook allows users to customize their news feeds by clicking "See First" on the news feed tab of a page they follow. Facebook could, therefore, pose short-term difficulties for other media outlets looking to quickly expand their bases. She said she was initially anxious about how the change could affect her business, but says the changes will more likely affect brands and businesses that use click bait to gain page views.

And investors may not be happy with the changes to the newsfeed.
