H&M tries to minimise fallout after 'coolest monkey' ad disaster

EFF members occupying an H&M store in Sandton

According to South African reporters for the Daily Mail, shoppers and bystanders were forced to evacuate as chanting mobs wearing red uniforms belonging to South Africa's radical opposition party swept through the retail stores.

The protesters were reacting to an ad in which a black child wore a sweatshirt that bore the slogan "coolest monkey in the jungle".

"The displays of violence at H&M stores across the country are totally unacceptable and violence is no way to fight racism, but only compounds it", she said.

The protesters were reportedly enraged and livid with the matter which caused them to fill the streets and ransack the stores by demolishing their products.

"We're deeply sorry that the picture was taken, and we also regret the actual print", it said in a statement. Television footage showed clothing in one of the South African stores scattered everywhere.

He was joined by rapper G-Eazy, who had been due to bring out a clothing line with H&M in March.

On Monday morning, AfriForum said it would lay charges of incitement of public violence against EFF commander-in-chief Julius Malema, deputy president Floyd Shivambu, and spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

Mpofu, in an interview with eNCA, reaffirmed the party's approval of the ongoing protests, vowing that they would not stop until racism against black people comes to an end.

H&M apologized this week for the advert and assured its customers that the jumper will be removed from the stores completely. A netizen "TheColouredZimbo" said via Twitter, "What happens if H&M pulls out of South Africa?" Ndlozi wrote on his Twitter.

H&M said it would "continue to monitor the situation closely and will open the stores as soon as the situation is safe again", read a statement.
