Giants acquire Andrew McCutchen as era ends in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew Mc Cutchen misses a ball hit for an RBI-single by St. Louis Cardinals Yadier Molina during the third inning Sunday Oct. 2 2016 in St. Louis

Major League Baseball insider Ken Rosenthal reported Monday afternoon that sources said the San Francisco Giants have agreed to acquire outfielder Andrew McCutchen from the Pirates, pending a review of medical records.

The All-Star outfielder and 2013 National League MVP batted.279 with a.363 on-base percentage, .486 slugging percentage, .849 OPS, 28 homers, 30 doubles, two triples and 88 RBIs during 2017.

The San Francisco Giants have acquired Andrew McCutchen from the Pirates in exchange for Kyle Crick and other unknown players.

Although they have agreed to a trade for McCutchen, the Giants might not be done in their pursuit of outfield depth.

If the Giants do not acquire another outfielder, McCutchen will join some combination of Pence, Gorkys Hernandez, Mac Williamson, Jarrett Parker, and Steven Duggar in the outfield.

After trading Gerrit Cole to the Houston Astros, it was believed that McCutchen would be the next in line to be dealt.

In his first three years with the team, Pittsburgh averaged 98 losses a season. With McCutchen just one year away from free agency, the Pirates were more than willing to part ways with McCutchen rather than see him walk away for nothing next winter.

McCutchen, 31, was drafted 11th overall by the Pirates in 2005 and was the franchise linchpin they envisioned for the majority of his Pittsburgh career, getting selected to five straight All-Star Games from 2011 to 2015.

Neal Huntington and his staff will save $14.5 million from McCutchen's contract, barring what they get in return.

Cole and McCutchen were the two best Pirates players in terms of fWAR from 2017. The same is true for reliever Daniel Hudson, who was in high demand last winter on the free agent market.

McCutchen's contributions at the plate should outweigh his poor defense, which makes this trade a logical move for a Giants team that aims for big improvement in 2018.
