White House claims Wall Street Journal misquoted President Trump

US President Donald Trump speaks during a cabinet meeting at the White House in Washington DC

Sanders blasted the Wall Street Journal with a Twitter meme that trumpeted: "The Wall Street Journal".

President Trump tweeted this morning accusing the Wall Street Journal of maliciously misreporting a statement he made in a recent interview.

The false ballistic missile warning in Hawaii was "unacceptable" and points to a need for President Donald Trump to negotiate with North Korea directly, Hawaii Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday evening, Sanders had tweeted that "Fake news is at it again!" and accused the newspaper of "falsely quoting" the president.

But the Journal stands by its reporting, as well as the transcription provided by an independent transcription service.

Trump defended himself in a tweet on Friday, claiming that he did not say "anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country".

The story comes just a day after he allegedly used the term "shithole" to describe Haiti, El Salvador and several countries in Africa during an immigration meeting with lawmakers on Thursday.

"North Korea is now in a position where Kim Jong-un is saying, 'No way, I'm not going to give up these nuclear weapons, ' because he doesn't see that credible message coming from the United States that we don't - we're not interested in overthrowing your government".

"I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un", Trump said in the interview. "I think you people are surprised". But now they are disputing what he said about Kim. "Just to be clear, you haven't spoken to the North Korean leader, I mean when you say a relationship with Korea", the reporter asks.

"I'm not saying I have or haven't", Trump said.

But the newspaper said it reviewed the audio from the interview and the transcript and believe his comments were reported accurately.

The relationship between the United States and North Korea has become increasingly tense since Trump took office and assumed a hard line against Kim's pursuit of a nuclear arsenal.

Trump is known for his antagonistic relationship with Kim, regularly trading taunts with the NK leader he calls "lil Rocket man", and most recently warning that he too has a "nuclear button".
