First Photos of 'Handmaid's Tale' Season 2 Tease Bloody Offred

First Look: 'The Handmaid's Tale' Season 2 Photos Show a Bloodied, but Determined, Offred

In turn, a central theme of the 13-episode second season, which moves past its source material, will be motherhood, with Offred determined to shield her future child from the horrors of Gilead.

The cast of the binge-worthy series is led by Elisabeth Moss and includes Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, O-T Fagbenle, and Amanda Brugel.

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States.

The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 premieres April 25.

That new area will first be explored in the second episode of the new season. Judging from all of last season's cutaways to sharp objects and Offred's growing need for violence, we imagine she'll only become more radicalized in Season 2.

The Handmaid's Tale was one of the most talked-about new shows of 2017 thanks to its dark subject matter, stellar cast, and incredible cinematography.

Littlefield admitted that the new season has a bigger budget than the first - a product, he noted, was out of necessity to expand the world and not so much the Emmy darling's runaway success. "We're not exiting that world (of the novel) at all".

"The biggest barrier of season 2 was season 1".

Executive producer Dan Futterman said in success, "The Looming Tower" could return for a second season telling a different story in the same realm. Miller also teased a handmaid funeral scene and one still shows a bloodied Offred - Elisabeth Moss' character. After a fantastic spell of win at Emmys, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, the dystopic alternate reality show is one of the most highly anticipated shows of the year. She doesn't seem to be bleeding herself, so maybe Offred ups the ante this upcoming season.

"It's easy in a show like ours to come up with perverse cruelties toward women and then it just turns into pornography", Miller said.
