MLK nephew: Trump 'racially ignorant and racially uninformed'

US President Donald Trump is seen ahead of the College Football Championship game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta Georgia

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is not a Day Off, but a Day On.

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed in celebrating and promoting the worth of every human being", the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee said in announcing this year's events.

Using the hashtag #ThankYouMLK50, Twitter users are encouraged to express their sentiments in reference to MLK.

"Our goal is to honor and promote the philosophy and practice of Dr. King while providing the community with a practical opportunity to serve others", Joseph Williams, Youth Action Project CEO, said in an email.

The celebrities will also invite their followers to share their stories of inspiration via the legend.

Nine houses of worship join to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy.

The annual King Day Commutative Service will take place Monday starting at 10 a.m.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a simple truth

The comments come a day after Trump, in an Oval Office meeting about immigration, referred to a series of nations as "sh-hole countries" and questioned why the United States was not welcoming more people from Norway as opposed to Haiti, El Salvador and African countries.

But this year's King Day events will "apply some added significance" to the upcoming anniversary, starting with the parade builty around the theme of "The Color of Unity", Thomas said. Though 16 state representatives, including Judge Harry Leinenweber, who now sits as a Ronald Reagan appointee in the U.S. District Court in Chicago, voted against a new bill brought by Washington, it again passed both houses.

"We want to bring attention to all the various concerns that Dr. King would be concerned about, were he alive today", Sadler said.

"I was at the grocery store with my mother in March of 1968 when a stern police officer told us to leave our cart and go home", she said.

For information on Martin Luther King Jr. The event features inspirational musical performances by the university's Minorities on the Move Choir, followed by reflections of keynote speaker Linda Dolny, chairwoman of Lander's Board of Trustees.

At the time, those in office claimed the main argument against it was that King never held public office, and making a federal holiday based on a private citizen would break tradition.
