United States issues 'Level 2 travel advisory to India' for its citizens

The State Department debuted a new system for warning travelers about potential danger abroad

The Mexico Tourism Board (MTB) called the U.S. State Department's new travel advisory system an upgrade over its previous one, but said there is room for improvement.

"Meetings were held with the diplomatic representation of the United States in Mexico to ensure that the travel recommendations to the tourist destinations of the states were objective and georeferenced, in such a way as to show the real safety rates in the tourist areas", the statement continued. "The FCO advises against all but essential travel to the city of Srinagar and travel between the cities of Jammu and Srinagar on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway". The State Department recommends travellers to be aware of heightened risks to safety and security.

The Level 3 category indicates that people should "Reconsider Travel" and means that travellers should avoid their journey due to serious risks to safety and security.

Do Not Travel (red): This level is given to areas where there is the "greater likelihood of life-threatening risks". At this level, the US government may have "very limited ability to provide assistance" to travelers.

Meanwhile, several countries which are ranked at Level Four include Afghanistan, Central African Republic (CAR), Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Somalia, Syria, South Sudan, Yemen and North Korea.

Reuters said in a report on Thursday that the advisory is often announced for nations at war.

"Greece at the best level of the State Department's new Travel Advisory Program", he shared in a Tweet on Wednesday. "These are simply based on our assessment of the security situation, and what we need to tell USA citizens who might be traveling or living in that country". They are also marked on an interactive, color-coded map: red for 4, orange for 3, and yellow for 2.

The State Department noted that there "are no USA government restrictions" in tourist areas in both those states, including Ensenada, Rosarito, Tijuana, Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and La Paz.

USA travelers were also warned to avoid unnecessary trips to the Central American nation of Guatemala due to the high criminal violence, sexual assault, armed robbery and gang-related offenses.

The State Department included Los Cabos, Cancun, and other major tourist areas in Mexico in an updated travel warning issued last August due to rising drug violence.

Northeastern states also find a specific mention in the advisory.

Cuba, for instance, is listed as a level 3 country. "In the past, there have been large-scale terrorist attacks resulting in hundreds of casualties", highlighted the federal executive department.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico's travel policy, a separate document for American government personnel in Mexico, had already banned non-official trips to Guerrero, including Acapulco.
