Why this year's flu season may be especially unsafe

Ohio Department of Health reports first child flu death of season

A four-year-old boy is the first child to die from the flu in Ohio.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) says the outbreak of the Influenza-A H1N1 that occurred at the Kumasi Academy Senior High School has ended.

"We still are entering the first peak month in this neck of the woods out here", Dr. Michael Johnson, director of community health at the Southern Nevada Health District, said Friday.

There have been 3,854 total flu-associated hospitalizations in OH since flu season began last October, according to ODH. "Starting tomorrow (January 11), the weekly surveillance data on adult severe influenza cases will be reported in the CHP's http://www.chp.gov.hk/en/view_content/2108.html" target="_blank" Flu Express published every Thursday.

The most recent update to the Walgreen's Flu Index finds Kentucky ranking at No. 14 for states with the heaviest cases of diagnosed influenza. "This season is a mirrored reflection of 2013-2014, which was one of the more serious flu seasons of the past decade".

Southern Nevada in 2017 had almost three times the number of flu cases reported in 2016. He stated that the flu is unpredictable. "Compared to the last three seasons, it looks a lot worse but it goes up and down".

If you catch the virus after having the shot, it may not lessen your symptoms, but it will help stop the spread to others. "Flu vaccination also can reduce the severity of illness if you do get sick".

People getting the flu from the vaccine is a misconception, de Lota said.

"High fever, body aches, generally feeling very exhausted", Dr. Cannon said.

Other effective ways to avoid getting or spreading the flu include: washing hands frequently or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer; covering coughs and sneezes with tissues, or coughing or sneezing into elbows; avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth; and staying home when sick.

Individuals with flu symptoms, particularly those with risk factors such as pregnancy, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, kidney disease, and children age five and younger, should talk to their health care providers about antiviral medication.

"Public health officials will tell you it's still the best way to prevent the flu", Schlueter said of the vaccine.

Visitors are also being urged to stay away from residential care facilities if they have respiratory symptoms, or the diarrhea and nausea associated with Norovirus or similar gastro-intestinal infections.
