Vivo beats Apple and Samsung to the top smartphone feature of 2018

Vivo is the first Smartphone Manufacturer to use Under-Display Fingerprint Scanner

However, Vivo's new revolutionary technology will allow company to develop slimmer handsets as they will no more need additional space to incorporate separate module like for the metal-based finger-print sensor.

The showcasing of the world's first in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone ready for mass-production marks a significant leap forward in the industry's development, taking users' smartphone experience to a new level. But, as the Synaptics have already crossed the limitations faced during in-screen fingerprint scanner implementation, the company is more likely to go with Synaptic's Ultrasonic advanced sensors. To this delight of fans, the company has showcased the same product at the CES 2018 in Las Vegas.

Synaptics has first revealed this technology in December 2017 and the news had sparked speculation as to which smartphones would sport this particular technology.

The use of glass will also help the manufacturer to make the phone water-proof (IP68 or beyond), as well.

The in-display fingerprint sensor will sit between the mainboard and the OLED panel where it will illuminate the finger and then process the beams of light. Vivo has mentioned that the availability of Vivo's first in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone will be announced in early 2018. These displays are typically edge-to-edge with a wide 18:9 aspect ratio. While rear-mounted fingerprint scanners are all well and good, there are people who just like it on the front of the smartphone.

We have been hearing about the in display fingerprint for quite some time. When fingerprint recognition is not required, the fingerprint user interface will be invisible and will not disrupt the overall visual experience. The technology aims to offer better and more convenient fingerprint authentication experience in future smartphones.

Vivo may be the first to deliver this feature but the coming months are certain to see other OEMs follow suit, with Chinese brands like Leagoo and Doogee also said to have similar offerings in the works.
