See teacher handcuffed after protesting superintendent's raise

A Louisiana teacher who spoke out against a superintendent's new contract was handcuffed and arrested during a school board meeting in an incident caught on video.

Deyshia Hargrave, an English languages arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle Schools in Kaplan, confronted school board members during the public comments section of the meeting and was escorted out the second time she approached the podium - resulting in a scuffle in the hallway.

"A superintendent or any person in leadership getting any type of raise-I feel like it's a slap in the face for the teachers, the cafeteria workers or any other support staff we have". Videos show her leaving the room and the marshal handcuffing her in a hallway. She is heard responding: "I am not - you just pushed me to the floor".

Hargrave also expressed frustration that "performance goals" were cited as the reason for the raise when teachers are responsible for helping the school system reach those goals.

She is now out on bond. She was, however, charged with "remaining after being forbidden" and "resisting an officer", both of which can be brought by a marshal, and do not require the school board's cooperation.

The superintendent's pay raise would "basically be taking money out our pockets", she said.

Local reports say Fontana was unfamiliar with the board and its members before the nomination, but his selection was made by Fontana in an effort to split a deadlock vote on approving the raise for Puyau. During the public comment portion of the meeting, Hargrave was called on to speak twice. City Prosecutor Ike Funderburk told KATC that the School System officials had called him this morning to reiterate that the system wasn't interested in pursuing charges.

It is unclear if the marshal was acting on his own accord or on the orders of board members.

"What happened here tonight; the way that females are treated in Vermilion Parish, I have never seen a man removed from this room".

Aside from these remarks, our association will honor Ms. Hargrave's wishes and refrain from any additional comments at this time, as the case is ongoing.

The teacher was still jailed and later released on bond.

In an interview Tuesday, Vermilion Parish School Board President Anthony Fontana stated that he supports the deputy marshal's decision to remove the teacher from last night's school board meeting.
