Red Cross facing blood shortage after severe winter weather

Red Cross: Severe weather adds to blood shortage

The Red Cross says they are in "urgent need" of blood donations after bad weather halted some of their collection efforts.

Severe winter weather has caused 150 blood drives to cancel, meaning over 5,500 blood and platelet donations go uncollected, the American Red Cross reported.

Of course, in the Norfolk and Coastal areas of Virginia, blood drives scheduled for last week had to be cancelled due to the storm, further hampering the donations there.

Eligible individuals are urged to schedule a blood or platelet donation today by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Type B negative: The blood type that can be transfused to type B Rh-positive and negative patients.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in recognizing National Blood Donor Month this January.

The agency also needs type O negative blood, which is a universal blood type that anyone can receive.

The RED25 program is aimed at uniting workplaces, community groups, schools and universities across the country to save lives through blood donations.

The Ipswich Blood Donor Centre is located on Level 1 of the Riverlink Medical Centre.

· Type O negative: The blood type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and is what doctors reach for in trauma situations.

THE Ipswich Red Cross Blood Service is looking for a number of people to roll up their sleeves and donate life saving blood and plasma before stocks run low.

The need for blood is constant, so it is important that donations are given on an ongoing basis.
