Bannon: 'I regret' delay in responding to book

Donald Trump Doubles Down on 'Stable Genius' Tweet at Camp David

"Donald Trump, Jr.is both a patriot and a good man", read Bannon's statement, which CNN obtained Sunday from a source close to Bannon.

As the president defended his tweets, which Twitter had already mocked in excess, #StableGenius trended to the top spot on Trump's favorite form of social media.

Bannon walked back many of his remarks on Sunday about the Russian Federation investigation, Trump, and his family.

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the President's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency", Mr Bannon said Monday. Bannon said his support for Trump and his agenda was "unwavering".

The book also quotes Mr Trump's former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, and other prominent advisers as questioning the president's competence.

The book, written by Michael Wolff, draws a picture of a chaotic first year in office.

Questions surrounding Trump's mental fitness are not new.

Trump said he had gone from being a successful businessman to TV star to president of the US. He gives Trump his regular intelligence briefings.

Full details will come from the White House when the arrangements have been finalised.

"I went to the best colleges for college", said Mr Trump, who holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. "This is like taking it to a whole new low", she told ABC's "This Week". "Watch the hatred and unfairness of this CNN flunky!"

On Saturday, President Trump disputed the book's account, describing himself as "a very stable genius".

Speaking to Fox News, Mr Pompeo said allegations about the United States president's lack of competence were "absurd, just pure fantasy".

Chatter about Mr Trump's mental fitness for office has intensified in recent months on cable news shows and among Democrats in Congress. The White House has called the publication "fiction".

Its author told NBC's Meet the Press he spoke with the president directly several times, but said that Mr Trump might not have been aware they were interviews.

Bannon, as Wolff wrote, said Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner's attendance at a previous Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer was "treasonous" and "unpatriotic".

The author says his revelations are likely to bring an end to Trump's time in the White House. It didn't exist, OK?

"The story that I have told seems to present this presidency in such a way that it say he can't do his job".

Trump has repeatedly invoked Ronald Reagan, tweeting Sunday that the former president "had the same problem and handled it well".

Reagan, the Republican US president from 1981-1989, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1994 and died in 2004. I have no particular politics when it comes to Donald Trump.
